Yes. The lake is approximately a five-minute walk from Okuta Bay Retreat. There is also a bush trail leading down to the beach below the retreat, which is a lovely place for swimming, picnics and relaxing beside the lake.
Yes. Okuta Bay (Mine Bay) is a favourite swimming spot for locals and is known for its clear water. Because the bay is only accessed by residents of The Point or by boat, it is generally much quieter than the lakefront in Taupō township during the busy summer months.
Lake conditions can change quickly, particularly when the wind increases, so guests should always remain alert around the water, swim close to shore and never swim alone. Large beach towels are provided in your suite.
Yes. The spectacular Ngātoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Carvings are located in the Bay and can be viewed from the water. The carvings are usually visited by boat tour or private boat from Taupō. They can also be reached by water from The Point's private boat ramp, just a five-minute walk from Okuta Bay Retreat. Experienced swimmers can swim to the carvings on a calm day, without needing to join a boat tour. Please never swim alone and always watch carefully for changing lake conditions, boats, jet skis and tour vessels. Alternatively, we are happy to recommend local boat tours to the carvings.
Yes. There are a number of excellent restaurants and cafes in Taupō, approximately 15 minutes' drive from Okuta Bay Retreat. We are happy to recommend restaurants to suit your tastes, whether you are looking for fine dining, a relaxed meal, excellent coffee or something casual.
For a special occasion or fine dining, Embra is one of our favourites. Other recommendations include Lionels, Plateau and The Brantry, while L'Arte Cafe and Gallery is a wonderful local option for lunch, art and gardens. For a casual Indian or Asian Fusion Incredible India or our small local 'cheap and cheerful' Central Wok in Nukuhau are always a great option.
During summer, we recommend booking restaurants in advance and are happy to make reservations for our guests.
Yes. Our location provides a peaceful base from which to explore Lake Taupō and the surrounding Central North Island. We are close enough to Taupō township and major attractions while being far enough away to enjoy a quiet lakeside setting surrounded by nature.
We are happy to share our local knowledge and recommend walks, bike trails, geothermal attractions, hot pools, art and craft galleries, restaurants and other experiences according to your interests and the time you have available.
